Girls' Basketball

Girls’ Basketball opened their season by taking on Lake Country Lutheran in a non-conference matchup and emerged with a 93-61 win. Senior JJ Barnes set the pace for the Hawks, scoring 31 points and coming down with 17 rebounds. Fellow senior Meg Decker scored 26 and had seven rebounds. “It was a good way to start the season,” said Coach Abby Jaramillo. “We still have a lot to work on, but this is a great group that’s motivated to keep getting better.”

The team traveled to Kettle Moraine High School for holiday tournament play on Friday, November 29th, and Saturday, November 30th. Known for the high-quality teams it attracts, this invitational was a good early-season test for the Hawks. Facing off against Menomonie on Friday, the Hawks came away with a 73-43 win against the Mustangs. Barnes led the team again with a double-double of 24 points and ten rebounds, and Decker had a milestone night, surpassing 1,000 career points in the first half and finishing with 15 points, seven rebounds, and four steals. Keira Kimbrough ’27 contributed 15 points in the Hawks’ victory.

Taking on Division 1 Appleton East on Saturday, the Hawks played a close game with the Patriots, with the girls ultimately pulling out a 63-43 win. It was another milestone night for Decker, who broke Prairie’s all-time steals record, previously held by Gabrielle Ortiz ’14. Decker finished the game with 10 points, six rebounds, and four steals. Barnes led all scorers in the game with 25 points while pulling down ten rebounds. The Hawks hope to keep up this momentum in their first conference game on Friday, December 6th, against Racine Lutheran.

Boys' Basketball

In their season and home opener on Tuesday, November 26th, Boys’ Basketball fell to Heritage Christian 54-44. Despite their best efforts, the Hawks could not overcome a 28% shooting night. This young squad was led by sophomores Ryan Vanoss with 11 points, Dalton Ahlensdorf, and Chandler Perry with 10 points each. Senior Carsen Eeg had eight points and five assists on the night.

The boys were back on the hardwood on Saturday, November 30th, at the Case High School Thanksgiving Classic, where they took on Bradford. This time, they shot an impressive 63% from the field, bounced back nicely, and matched their Tuesday point total in just the first half, taking a 44-21 lead. Coach Atanasoff praised his squad’s hard work, “They are a joy to be around, and I’m glad for them to get their first win of the season. We shared the ball, shot it well, and defended much better than Tuesday. Bradford is a quality team returning plenty of points and experience.” Five Hawks scored in double figures in the 72-54 win, including Vanoss (16), Perry (13), Eeg (12), Emmett Wassil ’28 (11), and Nolan Greb ’26 (10). Vanoss was named player of the game for his performance.

Taking on cross-town rival Horlick at home on Tuesday, December 3rd, the Hawks continued their winning with an 82-41 victory. Perry led the team with 22 points and seven rebounds, while Wassil scored 14 and pulled down nine boards. Eeg added 13 points and praised the composure of his teammates and how well they play together, noting in an interview with the Journal Times, “As long as we stay together, success is expected from our coaches and our players.” Perry added, “Every day in practice, we work. It just comes from the energy. That’s where it started, and that’s what we’ve shown.” The Hawks open their conference season at 4PM on Saturday, December 7th at Thomas More.

Boys' Swim

Boys’ Swim began their season strong at the conference relay meet in Jefferson on Thursday, December 5. The team finished second in the 200-yard Medley Relay (1:48.71) with Barrett, Mrotek, Breit, and Borzynski. Another second place finish in the 400 Yard Breaststroke (5:03.72) was brought home by Mrotek, Breit, Eli Coughlin ’28, and Borzynski.
