This Week in Athletics
Boys' Soccer ⚽️
The Hawks opened their season on Friday, August 30th, against Sturgeon Bay and fell 4-1. Sonny Wilton ’25 scored the lone goal for the Hawks, who kept the game close at of 2-1 until the 65th minute. With a quick turnaround, the Hawks were back on the pitch Saturday, August 31st, against South Milwaukee. Roy Rivera ’26 wasted no time getting the Hawks on the board with a goal in the 2nd minute. Brennen Luchun-Ledvina ’26 then went on a scoring spree, notching five goals in 25 second-half minutes. Arnav Deshpande ’25 added Prairie’s 7th in the 71st minute before Rivera added the final goal in the 79th. Coach Joe Manley was impressed with how the team was able to bounce back and take control of the game less than 24 hours after a tough loss.
The team traveled to St. Thomas More on Wednesday, September 4th. The Hawks struck early and went into halftime with a 1-0 lead but could not hold off the Cavaliers. The opponents scored 4 in the second half to pull out a 4-2 victory. Scoring for the Hawks were Brennen Luchun-Ledvina ’26 in the 16th minute and Liam Regner ’28 in the 66th minute. Coach Manley expects to compete with Thomas More and Shoreland for a conference title this year, and he is confident that the boys will respond to this loss with continued training and preparation for their next game.
Girls' Volleyball 🏐
Opening with their first official matches on Saturday, August 31st, the Girls’ Volleyball team had an action-packed day, playing well in 5 games. After dropping their first game 20-25, 12-15 to Badger, the team bounced back with wins against Wilmot (25-15, 25-19) and Stoughton Purple (25-15, 25-9). They finished the day with hard-fought matches against Kenosha Christian Life and Stoughton, ultimately losing each in a tiebreaker set.
Girls’ Volleyball had their home opener with a triangular against Sheboygan North and Kenosha Christian Life on Tuesday, September 3rd, and came away victorious in both matches. Especially satisfying was the victory in straight sets against Kenosha Christian Life, who bested the Hawks in a challenging tournament game just three days earlier. Coach Mel Mason praised the play and leadership of team captain and setter Bridget Cafferty ’25, who kept her team’s spirit high throughout both matches.
On Thursday, September 5th, Girls’ Volleyball beat Martin Luther in straight sets, 25-20, 25-20, 25-23. Winter Schienke ‘25 led the team with 11 kills and showed her senior leadership in keeping the team motivated and staying positive throughout the match. It was a great team win to open Metro Classic Conference play for the season.
Girls' Tennis 🎾
Girls’ Tennis lost a conference match 3-4 to St. Thomas More on Tuesday, September 3rd. While frustrated to lose a conference match, Coach Nich Schafer was very happy with the show of leadership by Laini Alexander ’25 (No. 1 Singles) and Tevene Vartanian ’25 (No. 2 Singles), who both convincingly won their matches. Also notable was the play of Cate Vaccaro ’27 (No. 3 Singles), who avenged a loss earlier this season by beating Erin Moore 7-6 (6), 3-6, 10-2 in a marathon match that went into a third set tiebreaker.
The Hawks were again back in the win column versus St. Catherine’s/Lutheran, winning 7-0 at Lockwood Park on Thursday, September 5th. The girls won all seven flights in straight sets. Especially notable were Laini Alexander ‘25 (No. 1 Singles) and Alyssa Chen ‘28 (No. 4 Singles), who did not drop a single game to their opponents, along with the Grace Dixon ‘25 & Bella Payes ‘27, who showed their grit in pulling out a close match at 3 Doubles to win 7-5, 7-5.
Cross Country 👟
Boys’ and Girls’ Cross Country opened their season on Tuesday, September 3rd, at UW-Parkside. Nolan Gasser ’25 finished at 20:40 while Cole Johnson ’27 finished at 22:03, both posting improved times from last season in the boys’ race. Helina Slamka ’28 finished 7th overall in the girls’ race with a time of 22:35 to lead the Hawks.
Girls' Swim 🏊♂️
PSC Aquatics opened their season with a relay meet at Beloit Memorial on Thursday, September 5. With a small team size creating difficulty winning points for team placement at the meet, our “Fabulous Five,” including Prairie students Jizel Diaz ‘27, Riley Saenim ‘26, Mars Jones ‘26, and Sora Pearson ‘26, were able to try new techniques and see their training come to fruition. Highlights include a personal best split for Pearson and strong underwater techniques from Saenim.
