Senior standout making an impact both on and off the court.
Over the past four years, JJ Barnes has evolved into one of the best high school basketball players in the country. This fall, she signed a National Letter of Intent to play collegiately at Marquette University where she plans to major in kinesiology.
Her acumen on the court has always been apparent. From a young age it was obvious she was born to lead the break and hit that smooth turnaround jumper. However, just as JJ’s game has continued to evolve during her time at Prairie, so has her desire to impact this community.
Admittedly shy and reserved as a freshman, she has grown comfortable in her role as a mentor and leader, particularly when it comes to spending time with the younger students during Prairie’s Buddy Program activities.
Earlier this month, Fox 6 profiled Prairie’s senior star as their Hot Shot Athlete of the Week, discussing not just her prowess on the hardwood, but her commitment to impact the Prairie community.
“My freshman year I was really shy,” said Barnes. “But I’ve learned to go outside of my comfort zone.”
Finding your voice isn’t always easy. Like understanding the best ways to attack a defense, it takes practice and desire. By getting comfortable with the uncomfortable, by embracing her role as someone younger students look up to, JJ Barnes has established herself not just as one of the greatest basketball players in school history, but as a thoughtful, insightful leader eager to connect with others and make a lasting impression.
On January 13th, JJ was featured on Fox 6 as their Hot Shot Athlete of the Week. Five days later she became Prairie’s all-time leading scorer when she scored 40 points in a 67-60 victory at Union Grove. Coach Abby Jaramillo’s Hawks are currently 13-2 and ranked No. 1 in the state in Division 4.
