A Summer Exploration of Reading & Writing

There are only a couple weeks left to register! Check out our reading and writing workshops offered on campus this summer — Prairie’s offerings are a great way to get a head start on summer assignments with friends and teachers.

English Workshops for 7th & 8th Graders

June 22 ­- July 3

Our English workshops focus on summer reading, writing, and discussion so that students understand these activities are an enjoyable pastime and pleasure!

7th Grade (8:30 to 10:30 a.m.) – Students will spend a week discussing the travels of When Zachary Beaver Came to Town by Kimberly Willis Holt.

8th Grade (10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.) – Participants will enjoy a suspenseful tale — Red Kayak by Priscilla Cummings – where three teenagers are caught in a wicked web of deception.

  • Requirements: Students must read chapter 1-8 before the first class.

Middle School Author Exploration

July 13­-17 (10 a.m. – 12 p.m.)

Students will learn more about their favorite author and create stories that are inspired by each author’s style. Students will also explore their interests, discover their strengths and learn more about the craft of writing.

  • For children entering grades 5­-8.
  • Tuition $55; Register Here
  • Requirements: Students must be avid readers, and each student must have an author picked out that he/she wants to study by the first day of class.

Get Started on Summer Reading

Students will enjoy working in small groups to complete the required reading for the new school year. Participants will get the opportunity to strengthen their reading abilities through guided instruction that is both functional and fun.

5th Grade (8 – 10 a.m.) – Required book, Maniac Magee by Jerry Spinelli

6th Grade (10 am. – 12 p.m.) – Required book, Number the Stars by Lois Lowry

  • For children entering grades 5­ & 6
  • Tuition $85; Register Here
  • Requirements: Students are asked to purchase the novel and read the first two chapters before the start of class.
